TORONTO INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION

Launching 2026. Updates soon.

A world-class stage

The Toronto International Piano Competition (TIPC) is launching in 2026 to bring the world’s finest young pianists under 21 to Toronto, positioning the city as a global hub of pianistic excellence.

Why Toronto

Toronto is a city with a strong affinity for classical music that produces extraordinary pianists, laureates of some of the most prestigious piano competitions. While Montreal and Calgary host world-renowned international piano competitions, Toronto currently does not have a platform to attract both local and global talents, despite being one of the world’s great cultural capitals. Interestingly, there are around five times fewer competitions in North America than in Europe, with no major competitions for pianists under 21 hosted in Canada.

Why a competition matters

While the landscape of pianistic opportunities continues to evolve, competitions remain the most reliable avenue for building a sustainable career. A review of concert seasons across leading venues and orchestras shows that most pianists performing at this level launched their international visibility through major competition success.

Though winning prizes may be the immediate motivator, in the digital age, competitions provide pianists with unmatched opportunities to reach large audiences, with major competitions drawing tens of millions of viewers worldwide. The value of competing therefore extends far beyond the prospect of winning, opening a myriad of artistic and professional opportunities for participants.

Focus on junior pianists

The TIPC will be the only Canadian international piano competition dedicated to pianists under 21, a group for whom opportunities are particularly scarce. For many, the question becomes existential: “Why am I practicing countless hours each day if I have so few chances to share my artistry?” Long-distance travel - often with a caretaker for those underage - is not only costly but also limits opportunities for growth, leaving many young talents without a platform.

This challenge is especially pronounced in Canada, where the country’s vast geography means that virtually every international competition requires long-distance travel. While some Toronto pianists have achieved international success, many more have been held back by the lack of opportunity at home.

Prestigious prizes

In addition to financial prizes, we are especially proud to partner with the Artistic Organization Cristoforium to offer the competition winner a European recital tour, culminating in a solo recital in Vienna, which will put TIPC alongside the world's leading junior competitions and ensure it attracts the global piano community.

The impact of the TIPC is best expressed by the pianists it aims to serve.

Dr. Aljoša Jurinić

Artistic Director

The TIPC is led by two of today’s most distinguished pianists of the younger generation, both of whom launched their careers at the world’s most prestigious piano competitions: Artistic Director Aljoša Jurinić, a prizewinner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition, and Artistic Advisor Tony Yike Yang, the youngest-ever laureate of the International Chopin Competition.

Their insight ensures a competition built around what truly matters to young pianists. Furthermore, with Tony raised in Toronto and Aljoša having earned his doctorate here, the leadership is deeply connected to the city while bringing a global outlook and international reach.
